Born and raised in Newburgh, NY, Makeba spent her childhood watching classic Hollywood films and dreaming of becoming an actress. In her senior year of high school she took a media production class and quickly fell in love with the art of film and editing. A year later she moved to Flatbush, began studying film at Brooklyn College and would eventually graduate with a Bachelors in Film Production and a Bachelors in Media Communications. She spent 5 years working as a filmmaker and photographer for the U.S. District Courts in Manhattan before declaring an LLC in 2022 and committing to her freelance business full time.
Today, Makeba is the proud owner of Problem Pictures, LLC and the CFO and COO of Colorway Productions. Over the years, she’s produced, directed, shot and edited projects for BuzzFeed, BET+, Elite Daily, Bustle, NYC H+H, Astoria Film Festival, and more.
Her goal is simple: showcase the Black community in a positive and emphatic light, while encouraging young Black children to pursue their storytelling.
